IFL Trivia time…other than Deathcake, which is the only other team to make it through an IFL regular season without a loss? That’s right, it’s King’s Gambit. Bonus question: Which team is the only team to make it through an entire season without suffering a match loss? That’s right, it’s again King’s Gambit. KGM absolutely dominated the competition in 2019, winning every regular season match 3 bouts to 1. Though they narrowly edged Real Rhydin for the 2019 championship (23-22), a win’s a win and a championship’s a championship.
Losing Bile, the 2019 MVP, is a tough pill to swallow for Xanth (0-2, -5.50 PDPB), Season 7’s Captain of the Year – assuming he’s capable of swallowing – but King’s Gambit returns with a mostly intact roster in 2020: Li Xioafan (1-1, -1.00 PDPB); Olaf Von Trunk (3-0, 5.00 PDPB) who was Season 7’s Rookie of the Year; Renley Killian (3-0, 5.67 PDPB) and Sophia Song (2-1, 1.33 PDPB), Season 7’s Playoff MVP. Although Xanth himself had a down season in 2019, he’s not likely to have two bad seasons in a row. That bodes ill for the rest of the IFL field, who will need to contend with a team that boasted three of the Top 5 duelers in 2019, all with a PDPB of 5.0 or better, and enters the season with 1 Powerhouse, 2 HeavyWeights and 3 MiddleWeights.
Notorious slaver Anubis Karos, who hasn’t fought an IFL bout since 2017 and brings with him a lifetime 10-15, -1.00 PDPB record, is definitely not a one-to-one replacement for Bile. Too, there’s bound to be at least some letdown from 2019 – after all, it’s unlikely that three members of the team will again go undefeated – but even a small backslide shouldn’t matter as there’s enough roster depth to keep this team right in the thick of another championship run.
2020 Season Prediction: 4-1, 2nd place regular season (IFL runner-up)
